Research & Instruction Librarian

Hunter Library seeks an intellectually curious, service-oriented reference librarian to join its staff. This librarian will provide research assistance, information literacy instruction and collection development services to  the Department of History (undergraduate students, master's students and 16 faculty),  the  Department of Philosophy and Religion (undergraduate students and 6 faculty), and other constituencies as assigned. Special aspects of the position include supporting all users' discovery of Hunter Library's rich collection of historical resources in print, microform, and digital formats, unique materials in Special Collections, and interdisciplinary resources such as retrospective newspaper collections.  All reference librarians at Hunter participate in the full range of general reference and instructional services, including some evening and weekend hours. The 12-month, tenure-track position reports to the Head of Research and Instruction.

Required Qualifications

MLS from an ALA accredited program; knowledge of reference sources and dedication to accurate and responsive information services; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with colleagues; strong commitment to student learning; enthusiasm for learning and applying technology in an academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Reference experience in an academic or special library; experience providing information literacy instruction; graduate or undergraduate degree in history, philosophy or religion; experience providing library services via web-based instructional delivery programs such as Blackboard or Moodle.

About the Library

Hunter Library has a long, respected record of providing excellent service to the university and region. The library is dedicated to the thoughtful integration of print and digital resources and to supporting and developing the general, information, digital, graphic, and visual literacy of students and the teaching and research needs of faculty and staff. The Reference Department runs a vital instruction program, reaching over 4400 students per year. The library has 19 tenure track faculty members, 30 staff members, and an annual budget of approximately $4.5 million. The library contains approximately 800,000 print and electronic volumes and provides access to more than 45,000 journals through print subscriptions and electronic databases. The library is an active partner in the Western North Carolina Library Network.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications. This is a twelve month, tenure-track position with a generous 24 days of vacation leave annually.
