DESCRIPTION: The Suffolk Public Library System serves the growing city of Suffolk, which has a population of 79,000. We circulate approximately 250,000 items annually. The Suffolk Public Library System is composed of 4 service units. Under general supervision, performs professional library work including assisting patrons regarding reference demands, assisting with questions and/or problems regarding resources and reference materials, selecting and recommending materials for acquisition, and providing assistance in the daily operation of the library. Assists in the overall supervision of the library, which may include supervising and training of volunteers and staff. Employee must exercise independent judgment in developing programs and completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with patrons and the general public.
REQUIREMENTS: Masters degree in an ALA accredited program in Library Science. Prefer 1-2 years experience in library services, computer support, Internet use and some supervisory experience, but new graduates are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of MARC format, AACR2 and LC Subject Headings preferred. Must be certified as a Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Library Board or have the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment. Some evening and weekend work required. Valid driver’s license required. No residency requirement.
