I am about to apply to a position that asks for letters of reference. What is the protocol for sending these? Do I ask my references to give me the letters, and send them all together? Or do I give them the contact address, and ask them to send the letters separately? The ad does not specify one way or the other. Would it be annoying to the library to receive three separate letters? One of my references now lives out of state.
Thanks in advance for your help!

This is probably a good opportunity to contact the library and get your name out there an extra time and establish some sort of pre-application review relationship. Barring that I would say error on the side of sending everything in yourself. You can have your references give you a signed, sealed envelope if you are worried about it looking legitimate enough.

When I have had to give letters of reference, I think in every case the organization wanted the letters sent directly to them from the references. I do not think the library would find it annoying to receive separate letters, as this is a common protocol. Robert also mentioned another good alternative of having signed, sealed letters from the references if you do end up sending them in yourself.
