I am going back and forth between wanting a general degree and a degree with a concentration either in cataloging/organization of information or in special libraries. My questions are:

1. Is it better to have a general degree to keep your options open career-wise or is it better to have a concetration in something in order to stand out for those few jobs?
2. Is there a need for cataloging or special librarians?
3. What do most students specialize in?
4. Are there any catalogers or special librarians out there that can tell me what they like/don't like about their jobs?

Some info about me: I have worked in Government Documents at a private university for 3-1/2 years as a library assistant and for 3-1/2 years as a student assistant. I don't see my future in Government Documents, or really in an academic library at all. However, I do enjoy my "behind-the-scenes" work and being able to work independently. Therefore, I don't think I would enjoy circulation or reference where I have to be around people all day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

In the past, I was a special librarian for a few years and very involved in SLA locally and nationally for while. I, and everyone I know, did more reference in the special librarian role than I do now in academia. You may watch to do more research before setting your path.

Also, it seems like more and more catalogers are taking on public roles as part of their responsibilities.
