I had a job interview recently for a supervisory position. The search committee consisted of librarians and library assistants. I did not meet with the dean, who I would be reporting to. I thought the dean would either be a part of the search committee or I would meet with him individually. Is it common practice not to meet with the dean? I wonder if there is an internal candidate and I was just interviewed to comply with the college's rules. What do you think?

Often Dean's schedules become very crowded and even change drastically. Dean may have been forced into another meeting and they did not want to reschedule. Did you ask about meeting with the Dean while at the interview?

Chris, I wouldn't read too much into this--usually committees try very hard to make the schedule consistent for different candidates. Next time, know it is okay to ask, "Will I have a chance to meet with the Dean while I'm here?" I suspect Brian is right and he or she was out of town, in a meeting with the provost, etc.
It does seem weird to me not to meet the person you'd be reporting to.
