I graduated from Clarion University back in December and have been applying everywhere. I have only received one interview and it was a phone interview which according to them I only got 65 points on out of 100 points, of which I needed to score a 70. I live in New Mexico and am now running out of financial aid leftover money. I have not been working because I thought I would have been hired by now. I have been living at my mother's since graduating. I really do not understand why I am not getting more notice. I know I have been avoiding writing cover letters, which may be an issue I could fix. Does anyone have any advice? I am going to have to work at a convenience store, a job I never wanted to back to.....

Evalute:
Sending out a lot of resumes?: Resumes that do not work will prolong your job search; show your resume to people who hire in a library setting and ask for feedback.
Interviewing Skills: A 65 out of 100 (while 70 is required) on your lone interview? Sounds like your interview skills should be polished after a few more interviews (or maybe your next interview) to land a job.
Cover Letters: Essential. Essential. Sell yourself.
Take pride in every application, every cover letter, and every resume you send out.
Keep at it. Landing a job in any field in this economy is a challenge.

What type of library are you trying to get into, and does it have to be in New Mexico? All states are having financial problems, but NM has always been a poor state. When I graduated a year ago, I looked pretty heavily for a job in NM since I have family there, but there were absolutely NO public library jobs open at the time. In the entire state. There was a job at UNM that I applied for, and I made the first cut, but after that I received word that they were canceling the position due to budget troubles. I'd say it's probably not you... there's just not a lot you can do right now. Would it be possible for you to start applying out of state?

I would see if the career services office at Clarion could look at your resume and cover letter. These things must be individualized for each job that you apply for. This is the only way to set yourself apart. I would also consider applying to a broader geographical area. If you are set on living in a specific area then you will have to be patient and probably work doing something else in the mean time. Good Luck!

You should be writing a cover letter for every single position. How many positions are you applying to a week?
