Does anyone have any advice regarding internships or volunteer positions for non-students?
I am considering applying to an MLIS program and would like to expand upon and diversify my library work experience. I have worked as a library assistant and am currently looking for more work in the field, but I'd very much like to explore areas in which I am unlikely to be able to find entry-level work (archives, reference, etc.) so that I can have a clearer idea about specialization once I begin my formal LIS education. An internship or volunteer position seems like an ideal way to do this, but it seems like the vast majority of such positions (at least those advertized) are reserved for students, either undergraduates or matriculated MLIS students. Since I do not currently fit into either of those categories, I am at a bit of a loss as to find such an opportunity.
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Approach the library and ask. The worse they can do is tell you "no". The type of position you describe is rarely advertised. My organization regularly has volunteers that are in your position - considering library school and/or considering their focus.

If you have the opportunity, knock on as many doors as you can until opportunity presents itself. Some libraries have specific guidelines in place for volunteers, or even if they are allowed. It might not hurt to have an inventory of some of the skill sets you have to offer...make sure you market them verbally.
