I'd like to try a hand in this field but I find it impossible to find a starting place. I've joined the IA Institute and sent in an application for their mentoring program, but the coordinator (?) is currently on vacation. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? I've taken a class on the subject through my online MLIS program. I'm also taking one-day courses in HTML and Dreamweaver later on this year.
For those who are currently working as IAs, what would you say are the absolute bare necessities to learn in order to get an IA job?

There are probably more jobs that require IA knowledge or skills, than there are jobs for information architects per se, e.g., web designer, content manager, etc. Analyze postings to find those that contain IA type of work. Perhaps you start out in a position where this is one aspect of the job, but that gives you the opportunity to practice and learn and develop your IA expertise. Even though IA has been around for a while, job postings may not mention IA, but rather the components of IA. You'll need to be a detective.
