I am interested in knowing why King County starts librarians at such a high rate of pay. Is it because of Seattle's cost of living or some other factor?

Are you referring to this position?
http://www.kcls.org/employment/Librarian%20I%20PS%20Employment%20Pool%202004-087%202008%20No%20Sub%20v1.pdf

COMPENSATION: Starts at $28.091 per hour, plus excellent benefits for regular union represented employment positions.

Seattle Public also has open recruitment, Pay Range : $26.21 - $31.79 per hour.
Multnomah County (Portland, OR) is hiring now $23.81 - $29.30 hourly.
Sno-Isle (north of Seattle), Full Salary Range: $22.92 - $31.50/hour.
Clackamas County (near Portland) $21.163351 - $26.748244. (love those decimals!)
Timberland Regional (Olympia) is hiring now, starting at $18.47.

There are a few other starting rates for Librarian I, adult or youth services, positions at other similar library system in the NW. As you can see, KCLS has the highest, but I don't know exactly what the reason is. I think they're pretty well funded, and it's possible they have a strong union, though I don't know that for sure. Anyone in WA know any better?

If you are interested in further tracking library salaries in the NW, see http://www.pnla.org/jobs/index.htm

Cost of living is part of the reason. Housing seems to be very high. I blame migrating Californians, although I have no proof they are the cause. Whistle

Check out this site for a nice comparison.
