I got my MLIS about 6 years ago, and worked for a while at an academic library. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I ended up having to move, and had great difficulty finding a job in my new location. So I changed professions (working as a programmer/database designer), but would now like to re-enter the library world. I feel really out of it, though -- what can I do to get back up to snuff as far as current issues in the profession? Any recommendations on literature to read, online blogs, websites, etc? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Try some of the better blogs, such as J. West's librarian.net. ANd Webjunction is a very good place to visit.

I maintain a site of web 2.0 and library 2.0 tools, resources, blog, etc.

See: http://www.squidoo.com/library2point0

Libworm (http://www.libworm.com/) searches of 1000 library resources by RSS feed. It is a great place to search for topics that you need to "study up on" or what to keep current.

I'd also recommend contacting a local MLS program--or your old one to see about some continuing ed options or certifications you might want to look into. Just to refresh your education and begin some networking.

Also check out the SirsiDynix Institute to sign up for free online webinars on current topics in librarianship. The archive is available free online as well.

The resources mentioned are great, but a lot depends upon the type of librarianship you want to pursue. FWIW, your temporary detour into programming and db design may well be a Very Good Thing.
