My wife is going back to school. This is a great thing. Unfortunately, the two schools to which we have narrowed down the search are both in small towns, where the university is the only major library employer around. There are currently no job postings at either university's library. We are planning a trip to both of these schools in the near future, and I was wondering about the etiquette of asking library directors for informational interviews. Is this a good idea? What should I be asking them? How much of my own situation should I divulge? I don't want to seem like I'm begging for a job.
I've been in my present position as a Reference and Instruction Librarian for a small academic library for two years now, and prior to that I worked in special libraries while finishing my MLIS.
Any thoughts?

I don't know about the etiquette of informational interviews, but here's my two cents: I would reevaluate the school options again, and try to go with a larger town that has job openings, or put off going back to school at this time if that is not an option. I'd be leery of moving into a "one pony" town in this economy. Smaller towns with all their eggs in one basket, as it were, are going to be far more vulnerable to downturns, and generally do not recover as quickly.
I don't know what field of study your wife is interested in. Would an accredited internet school work?
