This forum is all about sharing information and advice about the tenure process. Whether you are a tenured librarian, you are on the tenure track, you are thinking of applying for a tenure track position, or you are just curious -- this forum will hopefully become an outlet for questions, answers, and interesting discussion.
Let's share some ways to participate in professional development activities that can help librarians in the tenure process. I'm going to start a preliminary list of activities that can be used to further your portfolio. How have you used these (or other) activities in your tenure process? And how did you get started?

One way that I have fell into because of my job responsibilities is getting involved in consortial type groups. If your library already is a part of some consortiums, find out what they do, what kinds of meetings they have and when, where they need help-if they do need any. Because of my existing obligations with one group our library is a part of I was asked to be a mentor to help bring other libraries into the group. This came about partly because I needed to interact with this group, but in getting to know the members they found I could help fill a need. So, in a way it is committee work, but it is less conventional because it is not on campus and not one of our many national groups.
