Hello, I will be interviewing for a Children's Librarian position soon, and have a couple of questions. I'm almost half way through library school (MLS or a mix of education & schooling is the minimum requirement ). I was wondering if someone might be able to help me with a couple of questions I anticipate, in areas that I'm lacking. I've yet to take my colleciton development class, for example, and I'm sure I'll be asked something about the subject - one question I came across asked what your "philosophy of collection development" is. I'm not sure even what the question is asking. I've done some weeding in different areas of the collection, and also make suggestions to my manager about bilingual books, replacement books, etc., but other than that, I do not do any of the ordering for materials. Another question I have is about the thank-you letter. I know one of the interviewers quite well, as I worked with her before. If I do decide to write thank-you notes, I'm not sure quite what to say, especially to someone I know so very well. Any help would be much appreciated, especially in the area of what types of questions I might be asked for this specific type of interview.

On philosophy of collection development, I would interpret that to mean something like: how would you approach collection development in that particular library? What are your general beliefs/thoughts about collection development? Where would you take the collection? What review sources would you use? Where do you see the future of the collection going? I would recommend reviewing the collection development policy of that particular library before your interview, so you can be familiar with it, and perhaps even refer to it during the interview. Regarding the thank you letter, I would not write the thank you letter any differently for someone you know versus someone you don't know. Keep it very professional and don't make it personal.

Regarding the thank-you note, what exactly are you supposed to say? I've searched the Internet, but can't find anything specific for a librarian job, at least that you don't have to pay for.

Your search is being too focused. You thank them for the opportunity to interview and express your interest in the job.
