Since library school, I have had three professional jobs, and have only had the opportunity to negotiate salary at the most recent one. The first was a public library, the second was a state library, and soon I will start work at a public library system. The first job was in reference, then I switched to systems. Are certain types of libraries or types of work more likely to offer the chance to negotiate? I know that many public & state budgets are very firm about starting salaries, but I'm just wondering how common it really is that librarians actually get the opportunity to negotiate salary & benefits. What have been your experiences? Thanks.

I have been at two academic libraries and both had salary bands for librarians, so there was room for negotiation.

It is my personal belief that as you gain more professional experience, employers are more willing to negotiate salary. Especially when you meet the listed qualifications for the position. You have to request more money and base it on how your qualifications meet the position requirements. I am amazed at the number of people who do not attempt to negotiate their starting salary.
