I called the public library here and asked to be a volunteer. I told them my line of expertise -- technical services -- copy cataloging, processing, etc. I'd be happy in getting my name out there for paraprofessional positions. But the library has a new integrated system and the only volunteer opening was in reshelving. In order to network and get my skills known, should I wait until there's something better?

Tough call, but I wouldn't wait. They might have you start reshelving in a volunteer capacity, and bump you up quickly if you fit a niche in the organization. If anything, you can get a feel for how public libraries work on a day-to-day basis, and you can use the opportunity to evaluate your strengths and weakness', and where you might strive to excel once you land a library job that excites you. Once you're working in a library it can be a challenge to sit back and truly take everything in with no worry; volunteering can let you do that.
