I am considering going back to school for a postgraduate certificate, and was wondering if anyone could weigh in on the potential benefits of such a program. Specifically, I'm considering a program that focuses on digital libraries/digital information management. Since finishing up my MLIS about 3 years ago I've been working in the digital library field, first in an academic environment and now in a non-profit. In some sense, I'm already working in my field of choice, but I wonder if additional study and experience on the technical side could help me fine-tune my career path. Does anyone have any experience with the certificate programs offered by U of Arizona, U of Illinois, or Drexel? Is this even something that would be a meaningful addition to my resume?

I'd love to hear anyone's experiences too. I've been eying the Arizona program, because it's online and offers scholarships, but this year would be tricky -- hoping they continue to offer the same deal in the future.

I have an LIS post graduate certificate in library management. I enjoyed the mgmt courses very much, but don't think it has helped on my resume or helped me get jobs at all. But post grad certificates in other areas (like digital mgmt as you're referring to) might be different... just my two cents.

Where did your post-grad certificate in library management from, if you don't mind my asking? I'd be interested to know what schools offer that program!

The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, offers several certificates - I guess the proper phrase is "graduate academic certificates" - go to http://www.unt.edu/slis/programs/certsplash.htm for more information on the "graduate academic certificate in advanced management in libraries and information agencies." I believe the entire certificate can be earned through online studies.

I just noticed they also have one called "Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Image Management" that might be of interest to you?

I'm currently in the CAS in Digital Libraries at Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Did you have any specific questions about this program? I'm part time since 2005 in this program.

Glad to assist,
