Hi all,

I'm looking for advice concerning applying for more than one position at the same library/info agency. Currently, there are two similar openings at the same library I'm interested in. Is it generally a good or bad idea to apply for both positions? In other words, would it give the impression of not really being dedicated to one or the other position. The two jobs are really very similar, but one has more formal teaching requirements than the other (i.e., actually teaching semester long classes in the college in library skills as opposed to single session info literacy sessions). I'm drawn more to the one with the full teaching responsibilities, but the other position would also be fulfilling.

What do you think?

I would apply for both. Just make sure your cover letter addresses each one separately. Do not provide a cookie cutter cover letter for each. It should be two distinct application packets.

You need a job so it has nothing to do with "dedication". Many organizations will consider candidates for more than one position and funnel them to the best one.

Thanks, guys! I was leaning toward that. I figured that I should tailor the cover letter, but I didn't know whether it might signal - "hey, this guy doesn't even know what he'd really like to do in a library." I suppose I'm just being a bit too cautious.

Go ahead and apply for both, but make sure you acknowledge it in your letters. Try to spin in into a positive. Assume both search committees will know you are applying for the other job. Good luck!
