We are relocating to Ann Arbor and I am wondering if anyone can give me the scoop on what the job market is like there...Working for AADL would, of course, be my dream job, but in the months that I've been watching their job postings, I haven't really seen too much action. Am wondering if they tend to post their professional positions internally. Any info. on the MI scene would be much appreciated!

My brother just moved out of AA recently after living there for several years -- he's not a librarian, but originally had a heck of a time finding a job. His take: professional positions are scarce, due to a limited market and a glut of overqualified grads from UM.

There are several communities that are close to A2, the following website may help with job postings within a 30-40 mile radius. http://tln.lib.mi.us/jobs/also, A2's library does have quite a substitute librarian list. I do not think you are assigned a specific branch but it would be a way to at least get your foot in the door. Good luck. Also try the Michigan Library Association's job board...http://www.mla.lib.mi.us/jobline

As someone who tried the same move two years ago, I can tell you the market in Ann Arbor is flooded. I was, however, able to find full time work in Metro Detroit. There are a number of libraries in The Library Network (tln) that are located within a distance that you could drive. (I see someone already posted the TLN website) Be advised that there is a huge traffic flow into and out of Ann Arbor and in the metro area in general, so you might need to move to the outer suburbs of Detroit in order to make the commute bearable. Lansing is only an hour away to the NW also. Good luck!

Well, Michigan is in an economic recession right now and more people are leaving than moving here.... Jobs aside, I think you'll like the A2 area. Generally speaking the job market here is tight...and LIS jobs are competitive here as the two library schools in the state are in this area. Also, as newlib mentioned, expanding your job search to the entire metro-Detroit area will probably be helpful. If you can, try to locate yourself near a freeway or on the east side of the city to make your possible commute easier. There are a lot of libraries in this area though, so there is no reason to be pessimistic...just don't worry if you don't find something immediately.
BTW, AADL does post all positions publicly, as far as I know.
