For San Diego Public, be willing to take an hourly position to get your foot in the door. This can mean that you might be working only a few days a week, definitely on weekends, and nights. Be willing to work Sundays. And, librarians in the branches do a lot more building management (dealing with restroom problems, noisy kids, etc.) than traditional librarian duties.
Good luck!

My first job out of college was at SDPL. I got the job at an ALA conference by participating in a job fair, a very long time ago. I'd say the best way to inquire would be to simply send a cover letter and resume to either the Deputy Director of Branch Libraries or the Head of the Downtown Central Library. If they accept applications on a continuing basis, complete one so that you are at least part of their hiring system...I've never worked for the SD County System but the same proceedure may well apply. Good Luck.
