Hello, all. Newbie here. I have been job searching outside of my current state (NM) for the past year. I had a phone interview in December that didn't go any further. Same thing in February. On September 18 I had a phone interview for a position I applied for on September 3; this position had been posted on July 13. I felt like the phone interview went very well. The 2 people I interviewed with said they would be calling candidates this week to schedule an in-person interview for next week. They also stated that they would want this person to start the first week in November. On Saturday I mailed thank you notes.
Today is Wednesday and still no call. How long should I wait before I give up on believing that they will call me for an in-person interview? "This week" could be any time between now and Friday at 5pm, but even that seems to be very short notice if they expect people to interview next week, especially for a candidate like me who would need to fly there.
A little more about the job: I'm in NM and this position is at a university in Chicago. I work in higher ed now and know from personal experience that the interview and hiring process can be slower than anticipated because everyone is usually so busy. This position deals primarily with helping students transition from high school into college, which explains why they didn't get to phone interviews until last week (were waiting for craziness of first couple weeks of fall semester to die down). Also, they had called me last Tuesday to schedule the phone interview. I called back Wednesday morning and was told that all time slots were available on Friday and I had 4-5 slots to choose from; I took the first one in the morning.

Congratulations on getting the phone interview! I know it is difficult to be patient, but I would give the search committee two weeks before contacting them. Things like this usually take longer than expected. And I know from experience that one of the most difficult things to do at this time of year is schedule interviews around everyone's busy calenders. And don't worry too much about their timeline. This is their "ideal" start time and has to be flexible because it is dependent on so many things. If they really want to interview you, they will contact you and try their best to coordinate with your schedule (hopefully).... just try to be patient, at least until the end of next week. At that point, if you haven't heard from them, send an email and ask them how the search is progressing.

If you sent a thank you, you have already made your first attempt to keep the communication channels open. 2 weeks is often what I recommend to people before getting too aggressive with phone calls, especially if they told you one week for calls.
