I operate an employment site for librarians seeking employment in Wisconsin, and from time to time I get emails asking for advice about interviewing and resume writing.
Folks, I am not an expert in either arena (nor do I pretend to be) but I will offer my feedback and hope that equates in that person getting a position that excites/or challenges them.
One piece of advice that I have been dishing out freely lately is my take on when the job interview actually starts. While I've been a librarian for seven years now, I've noticed that some library directors/employers who know that the hiring process will be highly competitive actually make note of how you greet them on the phone to set up the initial interview. Some people might be caught off guard when an employer calls for a job interview, and I tell job seekers that they should be prepared when potential employers call. In the dominating age of cell phones, this also means having a friendly greeting on your voice mail. If your voice mail greeting is a one-liner from Fletch (I myself am guilty of this) now might be the time to change it to a more employer-friendly greeting while you are a job seeker.

Excellent points! From my own experiences, once an organization has your name (resume submitted, recommendation of another, casual conversation, name on the web, etc.) the interview has started. I am always surprised how many people start preparing for an interview once they have the location, date, and time. Everything they have done previously comes into play, so you better be prepared well in advance.

I have to agree with previous posts -- the process starts the moment you begin to look for a job -- your documentation (physical and/or virtual) and then especially when you go to the interview, the moment you step in the door -- how you treat the receptionist, your body language, your handshake, your smile! Looking for a job is a job! Shirley
