I'm very interested in applying for an academic librarian position at a branch campus of a major state university system. The campus is about half a mile from where I grew up and I'm very qualified for the job. The posting states that the application packet must be sent directly to the main branch of the university system. Should I send a resume and cover letter to the head of HR at the branch location? Also, where would the interview take place: the main or branch campus?

Definitely send it to the place they tell you to send it on the job ad. While it might be tempting to send a copy to the branch campus just to be safe, it could cause confusion, and might eventually get back to the people involved in hiring which could stand out as a "red flag" -- i.e., this guy didn't follow the instructions in the ad.

As for where the interview will take place, who knows? It could be either, but if you find that the interview is scheduled for the main campus, I think it would be reasonable to ask if you could visit the branch campus to meet the library staff there at some point before you accept the position, if offered. Others who have more experience in academic libraries might have a different take on this, but that's what makes sense to me.

Sorry I should have specified that I wanted to send a resume and cover letter to the branch location in addition to the entire packet I'd send to the main campus. Thanks for your advice!

You should submit by the directions only, unless someone involved with the library has told you different.

Everything in the hiring process is a measure of a candidate and that includes following directions.

I do not recommend sending anything at all to the branch location.
