Reference Librarian I, Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Primary Purpose:
Responsible for providing professional reference service to all NSU-affiliated library users, both local and distance, and Broward County users; for recommending materials for selection for the reference collection as well as specified subject areas; for providing assistance and instruction to the university community and Broward County users in current research methods and library resources; and for providing documentation to assist in teaching. Some travel to sites for teaching library research as needed. Weekend and evening hours are required.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Provide professional reference service to all NSU-affiliated library users, both local and distance, and Broward County users in person, by phone, and via computer.
2. Assist library users in the use and interpretation of the library collections and in identifying and accessing appropriate materials for research purposes.
3. Provide individualized and group instruction on the use of library resources, including use of specialized databases, and produce documentation to assist in teaching.
4. Participate in collection development activities to recommend selection and weeding of library materials.
5. Assist in the creating and maintaining of library web pages.
6. Prepare bibliographies and help sheets in subject areas.
Marginal Job Functions:
1. Participate on department, library and university-wide committees as needed.
2. Attend professional library meetings away from the campus, representing the library to the larger community. Participate in SEFLIN committees and events as needed.
3. Prepare special projects, such as surveys, flyers, documentation and statistical reports, as needed.
4. Act as liaison and promote library services to NSU students, faculty, and staff, and Broward County users.
5. Stay current in professional library literature and participate in professional activities.
6. Work with the physically challenged patrons to meet their reference needs, particularly with specialized equipment for accessing databases and digitizing documents.
7. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Current computer skills, including online searching.
2. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Required Experience:
1. Master's of Library Science from an ALA-accredited school.
