Review: It’s All About Student Learning
Dowell, David R. and Gerard B McCabe. It’s All About Student Learning: Managing Community and Other College Libraries in the 21st Century. Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited, 2006. ISBN 9781591581499. $45.00.
It’s All About Student Learning offers engaging perspectives on situations faced by community college library managers. A resource for community college librarians in managerial roles, this text also affords LIS students a peak into the world of community college libraries — a world where student achievement trumps faculty research, and librarians view services, budgets, marketing, strategic planning, and collection development in the context of teaching and learning. These and other topics of interest to community college library managers are loosely organized around the idea that community college librarianship is “all about student learning.” Dowell and McCabe’s selected readings range from general tips and advice to institution-specific case studies. Taken as a whole, the selections highlight the opportunities and challenges encountered by community college library managers who value student learning. The cumulative effect makes for an informative read.
